Shipping Services
We don't tend to think of many shipping services, since we all grew up using the local post office. However, there are many shipping services to consider nationally as well as companies that specialize in international delivery. Using shipping services doesn't have to be complicated. However, there are some tips you can follow to better ensure that your package or letter is delivered according to schedule. First of all, write or print the address very clearly so that even someone with impaired vision can see it. This is one of the most common reasons why mail is lost or returned, because of illegibility of the address. Make sure that you have the right address, including the street name and zip code.
Make sure that you have the right person's name on the address, since an improper name could very well render the package undeliverable. Most shipping services suggest to print delivery addresses in all uppercase letters, as this will reduce the chance of misreading a lowercase letter. (For example, reading "I" instead of "L") Addresses should have no more than five lines, so try to write neatly and with a view to proper spacing.
What about sending an item to a foreign country? You can address a name or location in a foreign language so as long as the names of the city, province, and country are also in English for easy reading. Some special delivery packages can only deliver packages that have addresses written in English. Be sure to also include the complete country name and no abbreviations to ensure proper delivery. The return address should also be neatly written or typed and should not include abbreviations. Include your name, address, zip code and country of origin. This is important information as the package may be rerouted to you in the event of an error or emergency.
Lastly, remember that some countries have restrictions as to what shipping services can deliver to them. For example, some countries prohibit mailing weapons (or even light weapons such as air guns), coins, money, any chemicals, non-preserved meats or soft fruits, perishable or potentially infectious biological substances, tapes or cassettes or other electronics. Some countries even prohibit sending a pair of binoculars! Additionally, if you are sending a package containing something of high value you may need to obtain a special import license from the country's imports department.
Keep these tips in mind before sending packages domestically or internationally. You can see what other services are available at delivery services or how you can do same day delivery.
